Sports Day

October 11, 2006 at 2:33 pm (Uncategorized)

This past Monday was a national holiday in Japan – Sports Day, which commemorates and celebrates the 1964 Olympic Games (which were held in Tokyo). Towns hold festivals that focus on sports & physical fitness. Families attend and children play all sorts of games and run around and just basically get to be kids for a few hours. Since this was our first full day in Soka – we were invited to attend and participate! (Fortunately there were a lot of low impact sports like bean bag tossing for me… though I did kick a soccer ball and shoot some hoops. Without going into details – let’s just say I should stick to the bean bag).

I don’t know if this is common in Japan (or in Soka), but I thought it was worthy of a picture and a mention on my blog…
